First 5 baby sewing projects
And so it begins. My first 5 sewing projects will be baby clothes because a) it will waste less material if things go horribly wrong, and b) I’m 6 months pregnant and nothing fits.
So here’s what I’m making:
(Oh and in case this isn’t obvious, the photos in this post are not my creations, unfortunately, but the professional shots of the professional garments, made by the professionals. I think one can tell.)
Cute and easy baby leggings that will allow me to practise using elastic, making cuffs and pattern matching that central seam. Will they fit over a the bulk of a cloth nappy? Only time will tell.
A versatile baby hoodie/top/jumper that will test my top stitching, necklines and ability to insert poppers.
I have a passionate dislike of knitted items that look too homemade, so how this beautiful knitted baby blanket made it onto the list is anyone’s guess. It was a late night impulse purchase and in the unlikely event it bears any resemblance to the beautifully made version in these photos, I will be chuffed.

This romper looks amazing so I can’t wait to learn how to sew button holes using the machine, insert more poppers and elastic and experimenting with gathering of fabric, right round the visible centre of the garment.

Zips, poppers, a hood, stretchy fabric, cuffs - I’m leaving this romper pattern to last as I fear it may stretch (no pun intended) my newbie sewing skills to the limit.
And finally….
In and amongst The Big Five noted above, I shall be sewing some baby bibs using various Liberty fabric fat quarters I bought back in the day when I thought sewing would be a doddle, and which I haven’t touched since.
As always, I shall be documenting my progress in an honest account of learning to sew, giving equal airing to the unpicking and the triumphs.
